✧ Short Story: Whispers in the Static ✧
Mira woke up to the familiar hum—that static in her chest. It wasn’t loud enough to call a storm, but it crackled like an old radio trying to find a signal. Every morning began this way, with a whisper that something was wrong, even when everything looked perfectly right.
She moved through her apartment like a ghost rehearsing for a play she hadn’t agreed to perform. Her coffee tasted fine; the sun poured in warm and honest; the day was normal, almost gentle. Yet the static persisted, telling her she had forgotten something, failed something, broken something.
Her phone buzzed. A text from her friend:
“Lunch later?”
A simple message. Friendly. Safe.
But anxiety translated it instantly:
What if she’s mad? What if you say the wrong thing? What if you’re too quiet, too much, not enough?
Mira’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, frozen between wanting connection and fearing it.
She finally typed:
“Yes, I’d love to.”
And something strange happened. The static didn’t disappear—but it softened, like someone lowering the volume.
Later, at the café, Mira greeted her friend with a shaky smile. She expected judgment, disappointment, all the awful things her mind convinced her were waiting.
Instead, her friend simply said, “Hey, it’s really good to see you.”
Not spectacular. Not dramatic.
But real.
The static retreated another inch.
Mira realized then that anxiety didn’t need to be defeated in a single battle. Some days, surviving meant answering a text. Some days, it meant stepping outside. Some days, it simply meant breathing through the crackles in her chest.
And that, she decided, was enough.
✦ Mini Reflection ✦
Anxiety often hides in the smallest moments—an unanswered message, a quiet morning, a normal day that suddenly feels heavy. This story is a reminder that you don’t have to conquer everything at once. Tiny victories count. Reaching out counts. Showing up counts.
If you’ve been feeling your own version of the static… you’re not alone.
